DATED 1st JANUARY 1919
WRITTEN AFTER 11 P.M.

1919 — What a contrast to last year, and today we can all admit our ignorance of what the future has in store for us.

How many of us realised on January 1st 1918 that in the space of 12 months we should be enjoying peace.

What Peace means can only be fully realised by those who have taken an active part.

To the man in the line, what does it mean?

It means that the dreadful uncertainty has passed, that now he may be permitted to look ahead.

In his saner moments he recalls the times, out of numbers, when his life had not been safe for 5 consecutive minutes.

Recalls scenes of the past.

He has lost good chums but still they live forever in his memory.
May they Rest in Peace knowing that their good work has not been in vain.

At every demonstration of good friendship this year and during the whole of their lives, I trust that before we think of ourselves, let us have a toast.

"To the Memory of our ever silent Comrades of the Great War"
