THE COUNSELLOR
Lee O'Neill 20 June 1999

Just a slip of a girl, what did she know about pain?
By coming to see her, what could I hope to gain?
Maybe she thinks she can help if I tell it all.
Does she really think she'll break down my wall?

Maybe, maybe not, but anyway I'll give it a try
If I don't end this insanity I may as well die.
Slowly but surely she breaks down my reserve,
And quite often she touches on a raw nerve.

But she is gentle and caring about how I feel
The concern she shows I find is quite real
I love her and I hate her but I keep coming back
Because to get me talking she has a real knack

She takes me right to the source of my pain,
Then gently, she brings me back again.
When she feels I've had enough for one day,
She helps me to put my memories away.

Sometimes my mood gets ever so black,
And I feel that I can never go back.
But I feel the pull of her persuasive ways,
And slowly but surely my mood she sways.

At times I try to fool her but she is too wise
And she so easily sees through all my lies.
And she stays with me and helps me see it through,
So with all his heart, this Vietnam Vet says, "thank you".

After many years she's finally had enough,
Counselling Vietnam Vets can get pretty rough.
She packs up her bags to give travel a whirl.
Where is she now I wonder this slip of a girl.

With heartfelt thanks to the VVCS Counsellors for their dedication and devotion to helping vets come home.
