Roy Henry Shiell enlisted in the AIF on 7th December 1914, in Maryborough Victoria, he was 22 years & 9 months old. He was assigned to the 12th A.A.S.C, 3rd Light Horse Brigade Train as Private No 5170. On the 9th January he was promoted to Wheeler Corporal and embarked Australia on 1st February 1915. They spent time in Egypt and on 26th February 1916 marched out from Heliopolis. He was transferred to the 5th Div Train , 28th A A S C on 27th March 1916 at Serapeum. Then on 30th June 1916 they embarked from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force (Flanders and France,), disembarking 30th June 1916. After falling ill he reported to hospital in the field in France on 17th February 1917 and was diagnosed with the condition nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). Then on the 5th March 1917 he embarked for England on the H.S.Panama and was admitted to 1st London General Hospital on 6th March 1917. On 8th August he was transferred to Fovant, Salisbury Plain Hospital. On 5th September he joined the overseas training brigade. On 26th December 1917 Roy joined the Favant?? A S C Detachment. Once again Roy proceeded overseas to France on 31st May 1918 leaving via Southampton. He was transferred back to 5th Train in France. Then on 4th December 1918 Roy was given orders to return to Australia. He left France on 7th December 1918 for England and boarded the Burma on 14th December 1918 to return home arriving in Australia on 29th January 1919-
