 Ted Merrit - 11th Lighthorse & 7th Field Ambulance & 2nd A Div. Engineers
Edward ‘Ted’ James Merritt,
Service No. 3563.
Born August 2, 1895 in Hughenden, Queensland.
Enlisted at the age of nineteen on April 6, 1915, in the 11th Light Horse Unit of the AIF. Landed at Gallipoli during the 2nd Wave on January 10, 1916. After a couple of weeks he was transferred to the A Section of the 7th Field Ambulance (not by choice - he was asked, or more or less ordered, to volunteer to become a stretcher-bearer). Met Simpson and His Donkey and actually worked for some time with him. Then served in France and Belgium. During his time in France he was detached from the 7th Field Ambulance and transferred to the 2nd A Division Engineers to become a Driver after he found an abandoned motorcycle in the battlefields.
Returned to Australia in December 1919 on board the H.M.T. Konigin Luise.
Ted died on 5th August 1970 from a heart attack.
