6th Machine Gun Company AIF
|
My particular ANZAC interest is with 6th MGC and I am in the process of photographing all of the CWGC headstones for members of the above unit. I would very much like to hear from any relatives of men who served. I have also conducted a great deal of research into the action at First Bullecourt. One of my wife's relatives Pte. Henry Wood was killed whilst serving with the unit at this infamous action.

26th Battalion
|
I would like to find other relatives from the men of 26th Battalion A.I.F
WW1. I believe all were from the North of Australia and all apparently
received Military Medal awards. The awards were given to the men for the
capture of the MEPHISTO, a German tank which is currently on show at the
Brisbane Museum. The tank was painted with the Australian badge and under it
was the words captured by the 26th Battn. A.I.F and most of theboys had
signed their name on the tank. in 1970's the QLD Govt. found it necessary to
sandblast the tank and repaint it but no signatures were ever replaced the
painting of the britsh Lion squashing the German symbol were also taken of
it.
Our Guillermo GARR who enlisted with the 26th A.I.F. had never told anyone
why he received his MM award, as this had only represented the loss of his 2
brothers during the war. He had died alone in Cairns 1973 and never did came
to terms with the events of WW1 or his losses.
Any diaries or written records of this event would be most appreiciated.
I did purchase the details of the tank in Brisbane but the names of the men
who had captured the tank were listed only by the 26th Battn. names
unknown, but looking at the AWM site many of the 26th did receive MM awards.
