Dear Mrs Smith,
Very many thanks for your kind letter of sympathy in our dear boys death, it does seem doubly hard just now as we were looking forward to seeing him very soon, but God has willed it otherwise & we must bear our loss bravely. We feel that he is out of all pain & trouble now & can leave him with our Heavenly Father.We recieved 4 letters from him since hearing of his death dated respectively Aug 20th & 21st, 30th 31st. He seemed in good spirits & told us how he had captured two machine guns & 10 prisoners all on his own & with a party of big guns & 20 prisoners he had been recommended for the D.C.M, had gained his 3rd stripe, he was looking forward with so much pleasure to coming home & said he believed the war would be over by Xmas. He had hoped to be on his furlough at the same time as Sid but was disappointed in that but hoped
