About the Site Owner

My name is Kate Blake. My interest in World War One began  when studying for my V.C.E .
I had to review a book called Men who March Away - An Anthology of poems of the First World War. Never before had I been interested in the subject of war. Whilst studying this book - the full horror of WW1 set in.As I stood before the class giving my review  -  reading out the horrific  statistics - tears began pouring down my face - embarrasing though  it was - I knew I had been touched by something that wouldn't go away. I began asking questions about my own family. I learnt of my great Uncles that were killed on the Western Front -   of the one brother  who returned home - a shattered shell of the man that had left to go to war. I also learnt that two of these brothers were awarded Military Medals for Gallantry in Action. It was hard to believe that in the course of two generations these brave young men had been forgotten - I felt that I  had been robbed of my heritage . All the times on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day I had stood at the service at school wishing I was amongst those who proudly wore their family medals. Little did I know the huge sacrifice that our family had paid - when I did find out  - I made a vow  that my own children would know of their heritage - and be as proud of it as I am. This site was created with this in mind. I hope it will help others to learn about the Anzacs and in doing so keep their legacy alive
